In today’s society, it is often hard to avoid certain things that disturb our natural balance. To follow Ayurvedic principles, we don’t really need to give up the modern way of living or live in a grass hut or desert island. Oftentimes, we do not really have a choice and should not lose the positive aspects of modern life just because it has so many negative ones. Instead, we can use this art to learn how to detect imbalances in our body. It can also be learnt what to do to reverse and stabilize such disturbances. This can be done before any disease is diagnosed and makes us unhappy.
Modern life often violates the principles of natural living. We work long hours in offices with artificial lighting and air conditioning systems. We shop in malls, get bombarded with advertising and pollution, and rush from one mundane task to the next. We don’t have time to prepare breakfast or eat lunch during the day. Instead, fast-food at our desk and a pre-prepared dinner eaten in front of the TV. Coffee keeps us alert, alcohol makes us feel ‘’relaxed” us, and drugs heal our ailments. When the weekend comes, we are so exhausted that we often don’t even have time to enjoy it! And then it’s Monday again with that well known feeling of fear – we’re back in the race during which we’re trying to earn enough money to buy processed foods, gadgets and get entertainment to distract us from the monotony of our lives.
So why does modern man, with all the comforts of technology that make life easier, discover that life has lost all its joy? This is because we have lost touch with nature – and we often feel empty and dissatisfied as well as physically sick for reasons we are not reallyable to identify. We overlook the fact that humans are as much a part of Mother Earth as any other species. Humans have forgotten the once instinctive ancient knowledge of the cycles and rhythms of natural life.

Instead of uniting with Earth, we have adopted unnatural practices that upset the balance of the mind and body. Despite luxuries available nowadays , people are anxious and depressed. We cannot sleep, concentrate, or relax. The imbalance in our lives manifests itself in addictions, diseases and dying much earlier than we are supposed to given the life expectancy.
